SO, HOW MUCH TIME AM I LOOKING AT? – Sentence Calculation

Patricia Warth, Co-Director of Justice Strategies, Center for Community Alternatives (Prepared By Alan Rosenthal, Co-Director of Justice Strategies, Center for Community Alternatives)

Even the most basic sentence calculation to determine what the terms of imprisonment of a sentence mean can be confusing. Sentence calculations are made all the more difficult because of New York’s multiple sentencing schemes, including determinate, indeterminate and definite sentences. This presentation will help you answer your client clearly when she asks you to explain what the proposed sentence means in practical terms. Understanding basic sentence calculations will also help you negotiate more knowledgeably during plea bargaining, thus improving outcomes.

HOW SOON CAN I GET OUT OF HERE? – Prison-Based Early Release Programs
Patricia Warth, Co-Director of Justice Strategies, Center for Community Alternatives

This CLE goes behind the prison walls to reveal the various prison-based programs that can result in early release. It will provide an overview of each of the prison-based early release programs, the impact on a person’s sentence, and the various eligibility and exclusion criteria. This seminar is important for any defense attorney who wishes to fully advise her client about what the imposed sentence actually means and how much time the client will likely serve. Just as importantly, knowing the eligibility and exclusion criteria of these early release prison-based programs can inform the plea negotiation process, and help attorneys bargain for a disposition that enhances the likelihood that their clients will benefit from these programs.
