NYSACDL Submits Letter to Mayor’s Office In Support of The Bronx Defenders

The New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, President Wayne Bodden, submitted the following statement in letter form to Elizabeth Glazer, Director, Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice in support of The Bronx Defenders.

The New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NYSACDL) is dedicated to protecting the rights of criminal defendants through a strong, unified, and well-trained criminal defense bar. Our guiding principle is that vigorous defense is the strongest bulwark against error and injustice in the criminal justice system.

The Bronx Defenders is an organization that NYSACDL believes shares in our above mission statement. Since its founding, The Bronx Defenders has sought ways to defend its clients, the people of the Bronx, most effectively. At a time when this office, which provides vigorous criminal defense to its more than 20,000 clients per year, comes under scrutiny, NYSACDL is proud to stand up for the historical work of The Bronx Defenders and to attest to the value of its holistic approach to bettering the lives of its clients.

The Bronx Defenders is a significant and effective community resource for an underserved population of clients who seek out the services it provides to assist them in everything from criminal matters to family court issues and public benefits concerns.

While our Association unequivocally condemns violence or any message of violence against police officers or civilians, we join in the sincere hope that, despite current events, the good work of our colleagues at The Bronx Defenders will not be forgotten and that the people of the Bronx and the City of New York will not lose a committed community partner.
