NYSACDL Joins Bar Associations Supporting Same-Sex Marriage

May 17, 2011: NYSACDL President Kevin D. O’Connell today met with representatives of the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar, the New York Criminal Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers’ Association and numerous bar associations across the state to support recognition of same-sex marriages.  NYSACDL joins these bar associations in urging the state legislature to end legal discrimination against same-sex couples seeking to marry in New York.  Existing laws discriminate against same-sex couples in health care, housing, inheritance laws, wrongful death actions and property rights issues to name but a few.   In the criminal justice arena, NYSACDL perceives recognition of same-sex marriages as ameliorating defendants rights in several ways including bail (recognition of family ties), prisoners’ rights (visiting and telephone access to loved ones ), and expanding the scope of spousal privileged communications.
